Blair Hall, the University's first collegiate Gothic dormitory, was built in 1897. It was a Sesquicentennial gift of railroad tycoon John Insley Blair. Phlianthropic Blair served as trustee of Princeton from 1866 to 1899. Blair Hall is considered their masterpiece of architectural firm Cope and Stewardson, who were among the first to apply the Tudor Gothic style to American college dormitories. It is one of Princeton University's most recognizable landmarks and is graced by the giant Blair Arch which once greeted vistors arriving by train. Originally, the tracks of the Pennsylvania Railroad came right up the the foot of the steps leading to the arch. In 1918, the railroad station was moved a quarter mile to the south as the train noise was distracting for the dormitory residents.
This picture is extremely hard to find. The American Architect and Building News had a very small circulation during this time. These original gelatine prints only appeared in a very limited number of issues that were distributed to a few prominent architects. This is from the architect Bruce Price's collection. It measures 13 by 17 inches. LARGE PICTURE. Has a mat border and foam core backing. The whole picture measures 15.75 by 19.75 inches (with border). Extraordinary detail in this early photographic print.. Shrink wrapped.
